Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG) Application Walkthrough & Information Session

Ghanaian youth represent the largest voting demographic in the country, and many are increasingly seeking ways to actively shape the future of Ghana. Having personally benefited from participating in a diplomacy fellowship, I organized an information session to guide interested applicants as a new cohort of the Young Diplomats of Ghana (YDG) opened.

The session focused on walking participants through the application process, while also sharing insights from my personal experience in the fellowship. The aim was to help young people understand the value of such programs and how they can use them as a platform to develop leadership, diplomacy, and civic engagement skills.

A key part of the session involved discussing the benefits of participating in the fellowship, including networking opportunities, leadership development, and exposure to policy and governance discussions. Participants were encouraged to see such opportunities not just as applications, but as pathways to actively contribute to national development.

The session was well received, with many participants engaging actively and asking questions about eligibility, selection criteria, and how to stand out in the application process. The discussion also helped clarify misconceptions and provided practical tips for strengthening applications.

Following the initial session and subsequent online sharing, the content reached a wider audience and contributed to increased awareness of the fellowship opportunity among young people.

Impact

The information session reached approximately 85 participants live, with additional online engagement reaching over 200 views. Following the application process, at least 5 participants reached out after advancing to the interview stage, acknowledging the value of the session in preparing them for the selection process.

Local Issue

As the largest voting demographic in Ghana, young people are increasingly seeking structured opportunities to engage in governance, leadership, and national development. However, many lack access to clear information about fellowships and civic programs that can help them participate meaningfully.

Positive Impact

The session provided practical guidance and personal insight into the Young Diplomats of Ghana fellowship, helping participants better understand the application process and the value of such opportunities. Several participants progressed to the interview stage and expressed appreciation for the guidance provided.

Community Impact

The initiative increased awareness of youth fellowship opportunities and encouraged greater civic participation. Participants were empowered to see themselves as active contributors to national development.

Sustainability

Future sessions will be conducted in collaboration with alumni to ensure continuous knowledge sharing and to expand access to information about leadership and diplomacy opportunities for young people.
